Finally finished

I finally finished this portrait on Sunday, I’m still not great at this drawing thing but I really am working on it. I actually really like the way the shading looks on it, I even took the picture from different angles to see what the shading actually looks like.

I actually had this fear of shading too dark (the paper was a really rough type of cartridge paper but I don’t remember what weight) especially when using charcoal because I thought that it would somehow ruin the picture and I would not be able to correct it but I have learnt that pencil and charcoal are very forgiving media.

This portrait took me forever to finish because I had this fear of drawing something and it not being ‘quality’ work. I especially did not feel confident drawing a baby because I did not have much experience with it so I had to stare at a lot of baby pictures for a while (not even complaining) in order to start sketching out the most common baby features.  I never would have imagined that such a simple task would have taken me that long.

If I had the confidence from the start, I definitely would have finished it in at least a week. Building my confidence is what I aim to work on a lot this year. So I will try to draw more portraits whenever I can so that I can get better at it.

Any tips on where to start building confidence?

What do you think I could have done a lot better on in the baby portrait?

  1. “We artists are indestructible; even in a prison, or in a concentration camp, I would be almighty in my own world of art, even if I had to paint my pictures with my wet tongue on the dusty floor of my cell.”

Strive on and cultivate this spirit that we artists must make art in order to live authentically.
